Making local correlations to national politics OR First predictions on Orr/Cowgill '07

If there's anything the citizens of Cambridge should be taking from the Connecticut senate race it's the overall importance of the primary.

Next Spring, it's looking very likely that there will be two Republican candidates for mayor, Bill Cowgill and Tom Orr. This means, of course, that the two will have to meet first in the spring primary. In Ohio, we have closed primaries. Meaning that only registered Republicans will be allowed to vote in the Spring.

That presents an interesting situation as very few people in this town are actually registered to one party or another. Although most hold a clear distinction in their voting history, rarely do they declare as such.

This, in my eyes, lends a clear advantage to Cowgill as he is closely linked to the Salupo administration and most of the few that would actually be registered as GOP members are more than likely strong Salupo supporters.

This is why I don't see Tom Orr winning a republican primary. However, there is a strong rift in the republican camp with those who dissent from the Salupo administration on the other side and this would be Orr's base. I'd imagine these voters would be less inclined to be registered republicans and thus ineligible until November.

It's these people that lend reason to the idea that Orr would falter in the Spring and flourish in the Fall. A belief to which I happen to subscribe.

So the lesson here?

Bill Cowgill = Ned Lamont
Tom Orr = Joe Lieberman
Jess Mosser = Trendy Washington Reporter

Regardless of which way you think, you should be sure to register. Also, if you feel strongly enough about voting in the primary, you should declare one way or the other. All the information you'll need can be found in the County Administration building, across the street from Theo's Restaurant on Wheeling Avenue.

I want you to take the time to recognize how journalistic that last piece of copy was. No profanity. No catty remarks. This is now your grandma's blog. Your grandma, not mine. My grandma is off-da-chainz.

Your grandma doesn't agree with your assessment of the primary! Sorry.
