From new poptarts to old drivers
Just so everyone knows, the new Strawberry Milkshake Poptarts are the best thing to happen to breakfast pastries since the toaster. Seriously, they're delicious.
Also, just so everyone knows, there are some very familar names still in NASCAR. Yeah, I haven't forgotten that it's race week.
Bill Elliot still races, but basically when he wants to. The layman might remember Elliot for driving the McDonald's car that was always given out in Happy Meals before anyone except life-long North Carolina residents cared about stock car racing.
Two time Daytona 500 champion Sterling Marlin still makes the field on a sem-regular basis. As does former Winston Cup champ, back when cigarettes really did make you cool, Terry Labonte. Now racing for Roger Staubach and Troy Aikmans' upstart Hall of Fame Racing, Labonte's best showing was a third place finish this year in the Save Mart 350.
Another driver who isn't so much geriatic as he is obscure is Boris Said. Despite likely having a better following, thanks in part to his afro, than all the previously mentioned drivers combined, Boris has only appeared in four races this year. Although he's known as more of a road race specialist, his best race came at one of the Superspeedways, Lowes, where he qualified second and was able to finish fourth. Ironically, Said only mustered a 31st place at Watkins Glen last week.
Perhaps the best story of success in old age is long-time Roushie, Mark Martin. Martin has been saying that this is his last season...and has been saying that for the past five years. Continuing his career has proved profitable though, as Mark has been a perennial participant in the Chase for the Cup the last few years.
However, it should be clear that none of these drivers have the prospective longevity of Strawberry Milkshake Poptarts. Go buy some.
